Great Aunt Ida: Firecracker. Hellion. Nomad. The ultimate independent woman. The originator of bohemian chic. She crocheted colorful afgans, dappled in watercolors, and designed her own dresses. At the age when most would move into a nursing home, she and her husband bought a van and camped all over southern Europe and Africa for three years. She has traveled the world over, but has little interest in the gentrified cities the rest of us swoon for. Don't get her started on blase Paris. She prefers ancient ruins and temples. In honor of her 99th birthday this May, I'd like to present to you the first in a travelogue series.
